A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

Nachtwachtgilde

A group depicting the “Nachtwacht” (Night Watch), the famous painting by the Dutch master Rembrandt, who painted a group of “Kloveniers” or “Schutters” (civic militia guards) in 1642. The last in the parade in Meerssen, they are dressed exactly as the figures in the painting: in front is Captain Frans Banning Cocq (dressed in black, with a red sash, who commissioned the painting) and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch (dressed in yellow, with a white sash). This “Nachtwachtgilde” comes from the village of Berg en Terblijt, 8 kilometres east of Maastricht.
